Advice from the Experts: Kim Decker

Kim Decker's background in real estate, current position running a home decor store, and enthusiasm for all things interior design play defining roles in her homey and sophisticated style.

Through running her store, Spruced Surroundings, Kim stays up to date with what is popular but also makes sure to integrate pieces that are beautiful and unique, not just the current fad. Because she showcases the pieces from her store in her home, which she defines as traditional and balanced, Kim has become incredibly skilled with blending styles and integrating pieces into an existing space.

Kim takes into account the style of her home as she navigates design. She finds herself playing with her "wood floors with a huge personality," working to match her designs with this statement architecture.

Kim's love of design began with the skills and knowledge her mom passed down to her. By elementary school, Kim was redecorating her friends' bedrooms, always met with an exclamation, "Wow, it looks so much better now!" She is proud to pass along this skill and love to her daughters.

Kim continues to advise people on their home design now. If you’re on your own journey to discover your style, Kim suggests,

For Kim, it’s the lake.

This love wasn't obvious at first, but when she moved away from the lake, Kim missed it so much that she knew integrating blues and decor that reminded her of the lake would make her feel more at home. The whole space doesn't have to match one theme but integrating this theme into your decor is a great way to make home feel comfortable and happy.

Kim also has a love for travel. She cites “Travel Home Design With A Global Spirit” by Caitlin Flemming and Julie Goebel, which advises gathering inspiration while traveling and bringing bits and pieces of it home in the form of decor. Kim’s goal for the future is to ship more items home to integrate these memories into her home.
